Founded in 1912 as Abbey United, the club changed its name to Cambridge United in 1951. Based at the Abbey Stadium in Cambridge, the club was elected to the Football League in 1970 after back-to-back Southern League titles. Their most successful period came in the early 1990s, when they reached the Second Division play-offs in 1992, finishing fifth - the highest league placing in the club's history.

Cambridge United have traditionally worn amber and black home kits, giving rise to their other nickname, the Amber Army. The U's currently play in League Two, having been relegated from League One at the end of the 2024-25 season.
