Super League began in 1996, when rugby league moved to a summer season and replaced the old First Division that dated back to 1896. It is often branded the Betfred Super League, and seasons are numbered in Roman numerals, such as Super League XXIX. From 2026 the competition has 14 clubs: Bradford Bulls, Castleford Tigers, Catalans Dragons, Huddersfield Giants, Hull FC, Hull KR, Leeds Rhinos, Leigh Leopards, St Helens, Toulouse Olympique, Wakefield Trinity, Warrington Wolves, Wigan Warriors and York Knights.

Talking points include expansion, club grading and licensing, the salary cap, overseas recruitment, stadium standards, refereeing and video review, disciplinary decisions and club finances. The pull of the NRL and the growth of the game in France are also regular themes.

The league is rooted in the towns of Lancashire and Yorkshire, where derbies matter as much as league points. Wigan v St Helens, the Hull derby, Castleford v Wakefield and Leeds v Bradford are among the fiercest. Catalans Dragons from Perpignan and Toulouse Olympique add a French flavour, and the Challenge Cup runs alongside the league each year.

Rugby league split from rugby union in 1895 as the Northern Union. St Helens were the first Super League champions and have won more titles than any other club, while Wigan, Leeds and Bradford have also dominated different eras. The competition grew from 12 founding sides to include French clubs, starting with Paris Saint-Germain and later Catalans Dragons.
