Peterborough United, nicknamed Posh, are a League One football club based in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. Founded in 1934, the club has played at London Road, their home ground with a capacity of around 15,000, ever since. Chairman Darragh MacAnthony has run the club since 2006, working closely with veteran director of football Barry Fry. Posh have built a reputation for entertaining, attacking football and a productive youth academy.
The club formed in 1934 to replace the bankrupt Peterborough & Fletton United, taking on the Posh nickname first coined in 1921. After joining the Midland League, Peterborough won election to the Football League in 1960 and immediately claimed the Fourth Division title, scoring a record 134 goals along the way. The following decades brought repeated promotions and relegations between the third and fourth tiers. Posh reached the second tier for the first time in 1992 after a Wembley play-off final victory.
Darren Ferguson's various spells as manager brought some of the club's proudest modern moments. He guided Posh to back-to-back promotions from League Two to the Championship in 2007-08 and 2008-09. The club returned to the second tier again in 2021 following a dramatic late promotion against Lincoln City. Striker Ivan Toney rose through the academy before joining Brentford in 2020 in a transfer reportedly worth up to £10 million, later winning full England recognition.
Posh became the first club to retain the EFL Trophy, beating Wycombe Wanderers in the 2024 final and Birmingham City in the 2025 final. Despite that cup success, the 2025-26 league season proved far tougher, with Peterborough sitting bottom of League One after a poor start. The club parted with long-serving manager Darren Ferguson in October 2025, replacing him with former Notts County and Swansea City boss Luke Williams and assistant Ryan Harley on contracts running to 2028. Results gradually improved and Posh secured their League One status with games to spare, finishing only a handful of points clear of relegation, their closest brush with the drop in two decades.
Posh have long had a reputation as a selling club, developing promising players before moving talent on for profit. The Peterborough United Foundation, the club's charity arm, has run community programmes since 2009 covering sport, education, health and social inclusion, including pathways for women and girls. Matchdays at London Road carry genuine local rivalry, particularly during the Nene derby against Northampton Town and the Cambridgeshire derby against Cambridge United. Former players and academy graduates regularly return to coach at the club, reinforcing a strong sense of community around Posh.
