Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of China and one of the world's leading financial centres. Its roughly 7 million people live around Victoria Harbour, on Hong Kong Island, in Kowloon and across the New Territories. The city runs under the "one country, two systems" model set out in the Basic Law, with its own currency, the Hong Kong dollar, and its own legal system.
Coverage often centres on the Chief Executive, the Legislative Council, the national security law and local Article 23 legislation, and the "patriots administering Hong Kong" electoral system. Other recurring themes include relations with Beijing, the economy, the housing market, the stock exchange, trade and the Greater Bay Area. Debate over freedoms, media, civil society and the rule of law also draws international attention.
Daily life in the city is shaped by Cantonese culture, dim sum, street markets, the MTR, trams and the Star Ferry. Festivals, the Lunar New Year and the arts district of West Kowloon add colour, while typhoons, crowded housing and high living costs are familiar talking points. Tourism and links with Macau and Shenzhen remain important to residents and visitors.
Hong Kong became a British colony after the First Opium War and was ceded under the Treaty of Nanking. The Sino-British Joint Declaration of 1984 paved the way for the 1997 handover to China. Mass protests in 2014 and 2019 and the 2020 national security law have since reshaped its politics.
Our NewsNow Hong Kong feed gathers the latest HK news on politics, government, business, finance, property, crime, courts and travel, along with coverage of China relations and the wider world as it affects the city.
